This section correlates blood w/ faith w/ music. "We sang about the blood Wed nights..." This section recognizes the cruelty and suffering in religion by demonstrating how children will punish the weak (sinners) for not doing their duty. It shows the "virtue" in doing something until you pass out or pee, that repetition is a kind of holiness. It also--like elsewhere in the essay--lists things (in this case churches) as if it's one of those chapters from the Old Testament (Abraham begat Isaac who begat...)
This, like all the sections is trying to build an idea of what the South in the US is like. A place of scary Old Testament religion, of poverty and alcoholism, of misdirected violence.
My question: Why the fragmentation? Why not just tell his story in a more direct fashion?
