4-1:
This stanza in the poem reflects on a neighbor the author mentions in the previous stanza. Along this frame by frame journey in the authors mind of this particular day/celebration (The United States Bicentenial), he goes into deeper reflection as he pictures the scene of the celebration that includes war veterans and this particular neighbor. This stanza is dedicated to the memory of this said neighbor as the stanza concludes by mentioning the lilac planted in the neighbor front yard in his memory. One interesting sentence included in this stanza is "The only boy who ever cared for me." This is one of the few times he hints at some time of scorn felt towards his father, as my first thought after this line is the first boy/male to love a another boy is usually the father, as it is supposedly an unconditional love.
