In the opening of “Under the Sky” I think that Bowles is
trying to create the setting, and introduce characters. From the beginning he
is cluing us into the type of person that Jacinto is, which to me seems to be
an angry and bitter person who doesn’t like to be bothered. For example, he explains
that while walking with his family he likes to walk up ahead and leave them
behind. He also seems angry and arrogant towards the people on the train,
calling them stupid because of the way they exit the train, which tells us that
he is not familiar with the normal ways of society.
